A mother having to decide between remaining at home with her children, who look forward to a seemingly hopeless, bleak situation behind the Iron Curtain or risking everything by escaping the country with her boyfriend, leaving her two young daughters behind to fend for themselves, cared for by her mother, in order to make a better life for her family in the long term.

Mother must fight her own instinctive pull of love between her and her children. She resents her mother and is torn between her boyfriend urging her to go and her children's need for her to stay.
